Cleaning Tips for Your Exterior Deck's Glass Railings

Posted on: 14 September 2016

If you decided to have glass railings installed on your home's deck to preserve your view and provide protection for your guests, then it is important that you know how to care for them and keep them looking crystal clear. While this can be a bit of a challenge since your new glass railings are exposed to the elements on a daily basis, there are some things that you can do to keep them sparkling, such as the following tips.

Keep Vegetation Away From the Glass

You should remove any vegetation that is in contact with your deck's glass railings. As plants rub against the glass or trees drop their leaves onto it, their dirt and oils can get on the glass railings and make them look dirty. By removing any landscaping that is near your deck's new glass railings, you will save yourself a lot of cleaning time. Without plant contamination, all you will need to do is clean your railings every month or so and after large storms that leave them with water spots.

Use Vinegar and Water as Your Glass Cleaner

While you can purchase a glass cleaning solution to clean your deck's glass railings, it's always better to make a mixture of white vinegar and water for the job. Since vinegar is a mild acid, it effectively removes hard water stains left on exterior railings from rain or snow. You can either put the vinegar solution into a spray bottle and use it like a traditional glass cleaner, or you can put it in a bowl and dip a cloth into it to apply the cleaner to the railing. You do not need to rinse vinegar from your railings; simply apply the solution and then wipe them clean.

Never Clean Glass With Paper Towels

Finally, while you might be tempted to grab a roll of paper towels to wipe down your deck's new glass railings, this is one of the worst things you can do. Paper towels tend to shed a lot of paper fibers and will make your railings appear dirty. They can also leave streaks on the glass if they don't absorb the glass cleaner or water in an even fashion. Instead of using paper towels to clean your new railings, use newspaper or a clean cotton rag instead. Neither of these options will shed fibers onto your clean glass.

If you want to install quality glass railings, be sure to contact a local specialist, such as California Reflections, for a job well done.

No Place Is As Important As Where You Live

I'm Maryann Delgado and I am very happy with the success my life has brought. One thing I have learned is to never underestimate the importance of your property, whether it is a storefront or your home. We spend the majority of our time in our homes, working and living our lives. I have visited many properties that just feel off. Those who live in work on these properties don't understand the changes that can be made to how they construct their buildings. I have had to learn everything I can about construction in order to build my perfect home and I have many lessons I'd love to teach to others.
